New York...., 1967. Lot includes 2 pieces: Typewritten letter, possibly a copy on thin yellow paper, from Matthew L. Lifflander, Hertz International, to Robert F. Kennedy. Lifflander writes, "As an additional premium to all United States Senators from New York who did not support Governor Rockefeller for re-election, and who do lease automobiles from Hertz - I am pleased to enclose a few extra stereo tapes for your new Lincoln." The letter ends with a humorous message, "It is our sincere hope that your desire to hear this music will encourage you to stay within the vehicle and keep you from standing on the roof of our car during public appearances," something Kennedy must have done on at least one occasion. The second piece is a return typewritten letter from Senator Robert F. Kennedy on United States Senate letterhead, thanking Lifflander for the car and stereo tapes, stating that he "found the selection in extremely good taste." Kennedy goes on to state cheekily that "I have not yet had a chance to test the structural components of the roof, hood and trunk. As you predicted, both the good music and the nippy weather have kept me inside." He ends the note with "I am waiting for the first thaw to revert to my old habits." The letter is signed by Senator Kennedy at bottom. Robert Francis Kennedy (November 20, 1925 - June 6, 1968), also referred to by his initials RFK or by the nickname Bobby, was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 64th United States Attorney General from January 1961 to September 1964, and as a U.S. Senator from New York from January 1965 until his assassination in June 1968. He was, like his brothers John and Edward, a prominent member of the Democratic Party and has come to be viewed by some historians as an icon of modern American liberalism. Fine condition with foxing and toning. A fun and interesting pair of related letters that showcase Robert F. Kennedy's personality.
