Society of Medals 90th Issue, Obverse bears Lao-Tzu and Confucius in robes at center with vertical incuse bearing the names in Roman letters loosely disguised as Chinese characters, Reverse has a river scene of the Yang-Tze gorges in the style of traditional Chinese paintings with immense cliffs dwarfing the boats below. Medal measures 73mm and weighs 241 grams. It was sculpted by Stanley Bleifield and cast in golden bronze with platinum-brown patina with only 1,300 produced. Stanley Bleifield (August 28, 1924 – March 26, 2011) was an American sculptor. He came to prominence as an artist in the 1950s and gained fame for his first commissioned sculpture "The Prophets" which he did for the Vatican Pavillion at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. He was elected as a member of the National Sculpture Society in that year.
