New Orleans, Louisiana. Dec. 6th, 1876. 2 page letter written and signed by I.W. Patton, president of the committee, in his hand. Discusses numerous political issues of the day, here are some excerpts "The Tilden Electors are in session to cast their votes as are also the Hayes electors". The election was in dispute until June of 1877, so this letter was written at the beginning of the electoral legal fight. Tilden won the popular vote, but the electoral college stole the election from him and gave it to Hayes. The other import of this letter is that they settled the fight with the "Compromise of 1877" which in effect ended the North's occupation of the South and the end of "Reconstruction". Interesting and important letter, especially when viewed in the context of the legal political wrangling of that day. Many other topics are discussed including a statement on Governor Kellogg. Deserves Further research. VF condition with light toning in some areas. Interesting and historic letter.
