Hartford, Connecticut, 1781. Lot of 3 pieces, all are I/C tax receipts issued by the Pay-Table Office in Hartford. Issued for 17 Pounds and 6 Shillings; 25 Pounds; and 21 Pounds, 10 Shillings, and 6 Pence. Black text with black handwriting, all three are signed by Committee members Fenn Wadsworth and Eleazer Wales, with Jedediah Huntington's signature across. The Pay-Table (also known as the Committee of Four) managed Connecticut's military finances during the ongoing conflict. Financing the Revolution laid a heavy burden upon each colony, especially those which balked at levying taxes. In order to meet immediate needs, such as wages, the colonies relied upon wealthy revolutionists, foreign loans, and taxes and gifts from abroad. Issuing notes, like these, was only a temporary solution. Fenn Wadsworth (1750/51-1785) was a brigade major to General James Wadsworth from 1776 to 1779. He fought in many battles during that time, but his failing health forced him to leave active service. He was involved in Connecticut's early governance, shown by his membership to the Committee of Four in this document. Jedediah (or Jedidiah) Huntington (4 August 1743 - 25 September 1818) was an American general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he served in numerous civilian posts. All are in Fine-VF condition with some toning. (3)
