It is believed that William Torrey gave the name of Manchester to "The Federal Iron Works" which he bought in 1841. In the 1840's, Manchester was in Monmouth County until 1850 when it became part of newly created Ocean County. The town kept this name until 1897 when it was changed to Lakehurst. (5)
