Gardiner ñas a Lieutenant, junior grade, in the Navy.î In 1908, Lieutenant Carlos A. Gardiner, while serving on the U.S.S. St. Louis, filed a patent for an improvement in a dress fastener which would be easy to open in areas not readily accessible to the hands of the wearer. Charles J. Bonaparte (1851-1921), grandson of J_rªme, King of Westphalia (brother of Emperor Napol_on), served as President Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of the Navy (1905-1906) and Attorney General (1906-1909). During his tenure as the Attorney General, in 1908, Bonaparte created the Bureau of Investigation which was renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935.
