Galveston, Texas. June 25, 1866. Vignette of patriotic eagle. Text of the certificates reads " I, James (Teinrman?) do solemnly swear, in the presence of Almighty God, that I will faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all Laws and Proclamations which have been made during the existing Rebellion with reference to the Emancipation of Slaves - So help me God". Signed and dated Signed by Edward T. Austin, chief Justice, Galveston County Texas. Printed by Flake's Bulletin Steam Job Press. Light toning of paper and one horizontal fold in middle, otherwise in XF condition. Evidently Confederate Soldier's coming back from the war were required to sign a loyalty oath. Historic and rare.
