New York, Paris & Netherlands, ca.1850s. Lot of 4 Issued Bills of Exchange documenting mid-nineteenth-century international trade and finance between American and European banking houses. The group includes first, second, and third of exchange instruments payable after sight, with examples drawn in New York and payable in Paris, reflecting standard commercial settlement practices of the period. One bill is issued by Duncan, Sherman & Co. in New York payable to Messrs. Greene & Co., Paris, while others show French-language text, endorsements, and European correspondents. Designs feature engraved borders, denomination panels, heraldic and ornamental vignettes, manuscript entries, endorsements, and cancellations typical of transatlantic exchange documents. Conditions range from VF to Choice Very Fine overall, with expected folds, toning, ink offset, and handling wear from active commercial use. (4). Sold “AS IS” no returns accepted.
