Washington, D.C., 1870, Circular warning financial institutions (National Banks) to refuse all $50 and $100 bills from the First National Bank of Jersey City, N.J. $12,000 of unsigned bills were stolen on April 1867. The man charge for stealing was found guilty, but due to a defect in the indictment, the verdict was set aside and the prisoner discharged. The numbers on the upper right corners of the stolen notes run from 19,609 to 19,688 and on the lower left corner from 671 to 750. VF condition wit some splitting of folds at right margin. Scarce Treasury department circular.
