Lot of 2 attached bonds, includes 1851, Troy, Salem and Rutland Rail Road Company's, $1,000 I/C, 7% First Mortgage Bond, Purple print on purple border, Illustration of Bald Eagle at top above title, POC's along bottom, Fine condition with archival reinforced light splitting at fold lines, signed by Jay Gould as president with POC's; the bond is pinned and lightly glued at the top to an 1865, Troy and Rutland Railroad Co., $1,000 Issued 7% Bond, Black print on black border, Small illustration of locomotive at top, VF condition with slight damage to bottom margins, archivally reinforced fold lines, and small stains, Snyder & Black Lith. This bond is signed on the back in a full and untouched signature of Jay Gould as a trustee, Rare bond with double Jay Gould signatures. Jay Gould was a railroad stock manipulator and later prominent executive. With Drew and Fisk, he battled Commodore Vanderbilt over the Erie Railroad (1867-1868); was president of the Erie (1868-1872); and tried to corner gold market with Drew and Fisk which caused Panic of 1869. He later controlled Western Union, New York City elevated railways, Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific, MKT, and many more railroads.
