New York, 1888. Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street, by Henry Clews, published by Irving Publishing Co., with a green cover and gold embossed title and seal, over 650 pages long. Henry Clews provides a firsthand look at financial markets and the atmosphere of Wall Street during a time of rapid economic expansion. Fine condition with damage to binding, and some fading on cover, pages show some toning. Henry Clews (August 14, 1834 - January 31, 1923) was a British-American financier and author. He emigrated to the United States in 1853, and originally worked in a pottery import business. He organized the firm of Stout, Clews & Mason and eventually brought his brother James Clews over from England to help him manage a branch of the brokerage firm. In 1859, he co-founded Livermore, Clews, and Company, what was then the second largest marketer of federal bonds during the United States Civil War. In 1877, he split away and started Henry Clews & Company, a member of the New York Stock Exchange, which made him enormously wealthy. He originally wrote Twenty-Eight Years in Wall Street in 1887. A longer, more robust version by Clews, titled "Fifty Years in Wall Street" was later published in 1908.
