ca.1859-65. 20 pages of early National Banknote Company vignettes used on various Confederate and obsolete banknotes, checks, stocks, bonds and security printed items. Included are proof vignettes utilized on the rare and classic Confederate first issue Montgomery banknotes. The vignettes include the large straight "Confederate", "One Thousand Dollars" and Montgomery titles from the $1,000, T-1 (Cr-1) banknote as well as the vignettes of Calhoun and Jackson; The $500, T-2 (Cr-2) banknote has the seated reaper and "The Crossing" vignettes, the Roman numeral medallion denomination counter "D", the straight line title "Confederate States of America", a curved Montgomery title and a proof of the $500I$500I$500 border; The $100 T-3 (Cr-3) banknote includes "America" vignette, the "100" medallion counter, the curved "Confederate States of America" and straight Montgomery title as well as the "One Hundred Dollars" title; The $50 T-4 (Cr-4) banknote includes the "Cotton Field" vignette with two slaves working and the curved "Confederate" title. In addition there are close to 300 additional proof vignettes covering navigation, numerals, counters, allegorical figures, denomination medallions, animals, agriculture, bank and business titles for banknotes and checks, different professions and trades on vignettes as well as other interesting security printed items from this well known security printer and engraver. Titles of vignettes include "My Horse", "Corinne", "May", "Jeanie", "In Harbor", "After Milking", "Washington", "Outward Bound", "The Drove", "Commerce" as well as numerous others. The condition ranges from poor to VF condition. The plate numbers listed on the vignettes or written close to the vignettes range from # 2 to 772. This is a unique record of the early workmanship and engraving history from this classic security printer. NBNC
