Washington, D.C., October 24, 1918, $500. Fourth Liberty Loan Gold Bond of 1933-1938, Issued less than one month prior to the end of the "Great War" this $500.00 Fourth Liberty Loan is not only rare and possibly unique in public hands, it represented almost 25% of the annual salary of the Middle-Class working American at the time. In terms of a conversion to gold (if possible today, though it is not) the value at $20.00 per Troy oz. of gold, would be in excess of $35,000.00 in today's gold value. Large Green Sunburst in the center the bond on the obverse, Washington vignette top center. Coupons 23-40 present, Treasury engraved signatures with embossed U.S. Treasury Seal. It is quite amazing to your cataloguer that this bond representing such a vast sum of wealth was not redeemed during the depths of the Great Depression just 2 short years after the last coupon was redeemed. Gun Metal Blue ink back with Justice draped with the American Flag, holding scales. Like the other high denomination bonds in this sale, should you miss purchase now, you may never see these bonds available again for quite some time or even your lifetime. Printed by the BEP. (From the Collection of John E. Herzog).
