Utah Territory (Inc. and Offices in New York), October 10, 1867, New York & Utah Prospecting and Mining Company, 1000 Shares, I/U stock certificate, S/N 100, ornate design with central vignette of a mining camp scene surrounded by forested hills, allegorical female figure at left holding a hammer, issued with attached 25-cent U.S. Revenue stamp at left, printed in black on gray underprint with decorative border, Mines were located in Utah Territory’s Little Cottonwood Canyon, where the company played a role in some of the earliest silver developments following the 1865–66 discoveries. Incorporated in New York in 1867, the New York & Utah Prospecting and Mining Company invested eastern capital into claims that later became part of the rich Alta district and was connected with the first smelting efforts in the canyon. Certificates from this short-lived venture represent some of the earliest corporate mining activity in Utah Territory. VF to Choice VF condition or better. Geo. F. Nesbitt & Co., N.Y., Printer.
