Printed in black with an ornate border and multiple detailed vignettes: George Washington at left, Chief Justice John Marshall at right, a central allegory of Liberty standing over a defeated lion with ships in the background, plus additional scenes of industry and railroads at the sides; embossed corporate seal present; issued to William C. Read of Lynchburg and hand-signed by the cashier and president, dated August 4, 1857; founded with capital of $1,800,000, the Exchange Bank of Virginia was among the state’s largest antebellum institutions, serving merchants, planters, and industrial interests in the years before the Civil War; the condition ranges from VF to Choice VF condition or better.
