Washington, D.C., New York & New Jersey, 1864. Application for U.S. Navy Prize Money – USS Lackawanna. Original Civil War–era multi-document application for U.S. Navy prize money filed on behalf of Joseph Bennett, formerly a Second Class Fireman aboard the USS Lackawanna, submitted through the Army and Navy Law Office of William W. Danenhower, Attorney and Counsellor at Law, Washington, D.C., and formally referred to the Auditor of the U.S. Treasury Department. The group documents Bennett’s claim for prize money earned for captures made during service aboard the Lackawanna and includes a formal attorney-filed application dated May 23, 1864, correspondence authorizing legal representation, a sworn Oath or Declaration of Identity, notarized witness affidavits, and official certifications, several bearing embossed seals and period U.S. revenue stamps. Bennett’s statements confirm his 1863 service, enlistment details, age, residence, and employment, and affirm that no prior assignment or application for the same prize money had been made. Signed by Bennett, witnesses, notaries public, and legal representatives, with locations noted in New York and New Jersey, this intact and well-documented grouping offers a clear illustration of the post–Civil War legal process surrounding U.S. Navy prize money claims, firmly tied to a named sailor and an identified Union warship.
