1927. Issued for $385 to U.S. WWI Army Veteran. 9.75 by 13.25 inches, printed on both sides, black text and title on green border with red seal on bottom right "Veterans Bureau" with eagle and flags, Certificate # 3253747. Back is orange with eagle over title of bond in middle and the right side has patriotic portrait of soldiers holding raised flag on hill. VF condition. This certificate was commonly known as the "Bonus Act" and was awarded to veterans who served in WWI between April 5, 1917 and July 1, 1919, with $1 awarded per each day served in the U.S. and $1.25 for each day served abroad. It was set at a maximum of $500 but were to be held for 20 years, similar to an insurance policy. Due to the depression in the 1930's many veterans wanted to cash their certificates early and in 1932 the "Bonus Army" marched on Washington. It was not until 1936 that Congress passed a law that allowed the veterans to collect the bonuses sooner. Extremely rare bond with only 3 known to the cataloger and 2 are in strong hands, this may be your only chance. No imprint - BEP.
