Washington, D.C., 1901. Rare commemorative volume, bound in full black morocco with gilt eagle on cover, issued for the inauguration of President William McKinley and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt. One of only 200 copies retained by the Inaugural Committee, with no further printings produced. The volume includes engraved portraits of McKinley and Roosevelt in an ornate design at front; nine pages of halftones; and reproductions of steel-plate engravings by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing throughout. Additional features include a roster of Inaugural Committee members with engravings of the White House and Capitol; a reproduced photograph of Governor Dietrich of Nebraska and his staff at the 1901 inauguration; and portraits of other political figures, including James W. Templeton, who revised and rebound the work. Templeton's note records that while the volumes were in preparation, McKinley was assassinated, with an "In Memoriam" page inserted. A scarce and historically significant piece produced in the brief period between McKinley's inauguration and death, marking the rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Mint condition as printed. B.E.P. and pother printers.
