New York, 1847-1849, original pen, ink and watercolor illustration of Native American "Progress" watching ship approaching, the design is 2 inches by 2.5 inches painted on thin cardboard, 4 3/4 by 8 inches, Evidence of previous mounting on back, the face appear in excellent condition with minor foxing on face. Wellstood, Benson & Hanks, was formed in 1847 and shortly after changed its name to Wellstood, Hanks, Hay & Whiting (ca.1848-49). Unique artwork from this historic and pioneer banknote engraving firm that in 1858 was merged with American Bank Note Company. One of 5 examples of this historic firms work in this sale.
