Dixmont, Pennsylvania, 1875. $65 I/U receipt for the payment of "Medical Attendance and Boarding of Miss S.K. Sampson in full for 13 weeks, 1875 and Clothing in full to Ap. 24, 1875," Brown text with black handwriting, with a gray underprint of a large institution building and grounds across entire receipt. Fine to VF condition with some small holes and signs of wear along center fold line, and a stain at top left margin. Dixmont State Hospital, founded in 1848 by Dorothea Dix, began as the Insane Dept. of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. This hospital was the first chartered public hospital in Pittsburgh and the first institution in Western Pennsylvania to offer treatment for the insane.
