Wheeling Virginia and Wheeling, West Virginia. 1857-1873, Lot of 8 pieces including 2 early Brewery letterheads. Wheeling became part of the movement of western areas to secede from Virginia after the beginning of the Civil War. It was also the location of the Wheeling Convention in 1861 and served as the provisional capital of the Restored Government of Virginia from 1861 to 1863. It became the first capital of West Virginia after it seceded from Virginia and was admitted to the Union in its own right in 1863. Letterhead and billhead assortment. Includes Wheeling, Virginia Letterheads, 1857, Missouri Iron Works; Jos. A. Metcalf, Commission Merchant Letterheads (2); and 2 versions of G.W. Smith, Malster & Hop Dealer Manufacturer of Pale Bitter and Kennet Ales from 1859 (VA) and 1864 (WV); and 3 other letterheads from the 1870's. VG to VF condition. (8)
