Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lot includes 2 pieces, both from Philadelphia in 1844 and related to the Whig Committee of Northern Liberties. One is a document, possibly a receipt, of purchases made of items such as 20 lbs of Rope, stating that payment is owed to a W. Brown; The other document is a repayment for services rendered on the day of the Presidential Election in 1844. The 1844 United States presidential election was the 15th presidential election, held from Friday, November 1 to Wednesday, December 4, 1844. Democrat James K. Polk defeated Whig Henry Clay in a close contest turning on the controversial issues of slavery and the annexation of the Republic of Texas. Northern Liberties District is now known as the Northern Liberties, and is still a neighborhood in Philadelphia. Unique and rare documents relating to mid-1800s American political history.
