August 3rd, 1914, Issued and uncancelled scrip note for $1, Black on off white paper, Ornate title and design, no vignettes, back orange-yellow with portrait of young girl in middle, S/N 1630, VF to Choice VF condition. Western litho Co., Wichita. Rare depression related scrip note that was issued due to the onset of the First World War. As an additional emergency measure, the New York Clearing House Association on the morning of August 3, 1914, began the issuance to applying banks of clearing-house loan certificates, which, as in several previous crises, gave further relief to a strained situation and was reported at $158,327,000. The clearing-house associations in Chicago, St. Louis, and in other important cities throughout the country including in Kansas had followed the lead of New York in the issue of loan certificates to help meet threatening conditions.
