Washington, D.C......, 1862. Interesting and unique handwritten letter from Secretary of State William Henry Seward to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, on Department of State letterhead with embossed Congress design at top left. The letter is regarding the capture and possible transfer of prisoner Henry Myers. Seward writes that Myers was "arrested at Tangier, Africa" and was sent to Boston and committed to Fort Warren. He continues on to remark that Myers "has addressed a letter to this Department" stating that he was due to be transferred to Fort Lafayette as a prisoner of State. Seward is looking to confirm that this was ordered by the War Department. Signature of Seward is at bottom right corner. Edwin McMasters Stanton (December 19, 1814 - December 24, 1869) was an American lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration during most of the American Civil War. Stanton's management helped organize the massive military resources of the North and guide the Union to victory. However, he was criticized by many Union generals, who perceived him as overcautious and micromanaging. He also organized the manhunt for Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. William Henry Seward (May 16, 1801 - October 10, 1872) was an American politician who served as United States Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869, and earlier served as governor of New York and as a United States Senator. A determined opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the American Civil War, he was a prominent figure in the Republican Party in its formative years, and was praised for his work on behalf of the Union as Secretary of State during the Civil War. He also negotiated the treaty for the United States to purchase the Alaskan Territory. He also was one of the targets of the 1865 assassination plot that killed Lincoln. Fine-VF condition with some foxing and water stain at top left, otherwise in great condition. Rare and unique piece of United States history.
