Newark, NJ. Lot includes 5 pieces: $5, 1933 Newark Clearing House Certificate in green; $20 Newark Clearing House Certificate in orange; Letter sent on Federal Reserve Bank of New York letterhead, stating that the $5 and $20 certificates are enclosed, and that they have never been circulated to the public; Printed paper stock with the message "Currency Certificates prepared under the direction of special committee of the Newark Clearing House Association March 5th to 12th, 1933"; and a newspaper article that provides further provenance for the certificates. During the 1933 Great Depression, many cities in America prepared for "possible suspension of currency...by the Reserve Banks and commercial banks." Clearing House Certificates were designed to serve as circulated currency during a possible reorganization period. The article states that less than $4,000,000 were printed, and none ever entered public circulation. "The unused engravings were stored in large wooden crates until 1941, when they were burned under supervision of the Newark Clearing House authorities." Rare piece of a little-known element of Great Depression fiscal history with included provenance. Rare Depression Scrip Pair and related documents. (5)
