Virginia, 1930. Document signed by citizens of Virginia putting forth their own funds to build a memorial "in the form of a carillon, to the patriotism and valor of the soldiers, sailors, marines, and women from Virginia who served in the world war." The World War I Memorial Carillon, built by Cram & Ferguson in 1932, is a memorial to the roughly 3,700 Virginians who died in that war; it contains 56 bells and is 240 feet tall. The Carillon is played on occasions such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and July 4, and is also used for hosting wedding receptions, parties, meetings, and other such gatherings.
